Popocatepetl is Mexico's second highest peak and it's most active volcano. It looms over the adjacent valleys as an iconic landmark. It has had more than 15 major eruptions since the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500's. Most recently, it erupted June 2019 sending ash clouds thousands of feet into the air. While visiting the surrounding valleys, we looked high and low to find a clean viewpoint where this church lined up with the volcano. It wasn't easy and required a bit of climbing and some really good luck! While we were photographing at sunrise, a small puff of ash came out of the volcano. It's an ever-present reminder of the great forces of nature at work below the surface
