Our December vacation in central Mexico continues with a 5 day visit the City of Puebla, capital of Puebla State. This is our 4th visit to the city. The historic center of the city of Puebla was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Center in 1987 with 2,619 monuments, making Puebla the city with the largest number of monuments in the Americas. In 2005 the Palafoxian Library, considered the oldest library in the Americas was added to the UNESCO listings. Puebla is noted for its fine museums, opulent churches, excellent universities, talavera poblanos pottery, mole sauce and the active volcano Popocatépetl. Puebla is officially called Puebla de Zaragoza, after the general who won the Cinco de Mayo Battle which took place May 5, 1862, the day Mexico took over French forces in the city. This is not a mainstream celebration in Mexico (it is mostly celebrated in the city of Puebla and in the USA).
